TEAM GUIDELINES and EXPECTATIONS

The Character of a Carolina Hornets Player
As you go through life it is important to know that your character defines you. The CHARACTER of a Hornets is essential to the success of our organization. Hornets are prideful, resilient, accountable, dedicated, and most importantly COMPETITORS. There is no wonder that many of you chose basketball as your arena to compete in.
As a Hornet we want you to bring that competitive drive to the court but want to ensure that we highlight a few, if not all of those other qualities as well.

PRIDE: Take honor/ pride in your organization and fellow team members. This is done in a variety of ways. Through uniformity, representation and respect.
  • Uniformity- When we play as an organization, please make sure you represent our organization by wearing your Hornets gear.
  • Respect ALL members of our organization (coaches, teammates, organization staff and volunteers, parents and most importantly YOURSELF)
  • Everyone of you is in different stages in your skills development as a player. Refrain from bashing your teammates to one another, at school with peers who are not on the team or on social media - If a disagreement cannot be handled amongst yourselves, inform your coaches.
While there is ALWAYS pride taken in winning; remember that PRIDE sometimes comes before fall. Therefore, as a HORNET we take pride in:
  • Refraining from taunting the other teams (Celebrate BUT DON’T celebrate in a way that comes across as belittling
  • Refraining from arguing with referees (Let your coaches handle it)
  • Refraining from arguing with your coach.
RESILIENCE: The game of basketball can be an emotional rollercoaster! It’s exhilarating when you and your team are making the shots, getting the rebounds and defending the goals with no issues. However, a true testament of your resilience as a player comes through how you handle the lessons.
  • Refrain from showing your frustration on the court by yelling at your teammates and coaches (YES, we know that it’s easier said than done) - Take a deep breath, count from 10 to 1 and get your head back in the game.
  • Always show good sportsmanship at the end of the games by; shaking your opponent's hand.
  • RESPECT the GAME!
ACCOUNTABILITY: As you grow and develop on the court we also want you to grow and develop as mature, accountable young adults. Accountability comes in many shapes and forms. We want our players to demonstrate it in the following areas:
  • Supporting/Encouraging each other: Be your teammates BEST HYPE MAN or HYPE MEN! This goes for both on and off the court.
  • In practice: make sure your teammates are listening, hustling and giving their all at ALL times
  • During game play: Constantly encourage each other; talk to each other on the court; sit with each other as a team.
  • When instructed to rest; warm up - ensure that every man is doing what needs to be done/as expected and not doing their own thing.
  • Constantly check-in with your teammates away from the court: CREATE a FAMILY UNIT!
  • Ensure that everyone is doing what they need to do academically and holding them accountable when they don’t - We want STUDENT- ATHLETES!!!
  • Nobody should be yelling louder or high fiving more than you all for each other!
Uniformity: As an organization we want you to take being a MEMBER of this organization seriously. Sometimes this comes through operating as one fluid unit. Here’s that question again: What does this look like?
  • Dress as a unit - Wear warm-up suits for every gameday. If you have not received your suit yet, please wear something as close to our team colors as possible.
  • Pay attention to how you go out on the court: Shirts tucked (jewelry removed, and shoes tied). If you see a teammate out of order, let them know.
  • In practice - run drills, follow directions as a unit.
  • During game play - Work together, talk to your teammates, help each other to read the play.

PARENT GUIDELINES and EXPECTATIONS

Parent expectations for team organization
  • Participate in all fundraising efforts (Little effort reaps, little reward); If you do not participate, you will incur the out-of-pockets expenses associated with the individual player amount determined by the board to be raised through said fundraising efforts.
  • Parent meeting: We will attempt to give a two week notification on all parent meetings. In the event that you are unable to attend; please send a representative for your player or schedule a face-to-face meeting with our Managing Directors outside of practice.
Parents expectations for team play
  • Parents are expected to cheer for the whole team
  • Refrain from demonstrating negative behavior towards opponents and their families (When they go low; we go high)
  • Attempt to refrain from sideline coaching (It can confuse the players on the court).
  • Coach has a 24 hour policy: Refrain from addressing game play, behavior, coaching related issues with coach staff until 24 hours after a game. (Sleep on...regroup...bring it to the table.)
